"I’m really grateful that I pushed myself to take that step."
Victoria Gwilt, Business Support Manager, on The Secret Club membership.
Being part of this group has helped me recognise that my own experiences and perspective do have value.
When I first applied to become a member of The Secret Club I was honestly quite nervous. It was very much outside my comfort zone, and the idea of being part of a mentoring group with people I saw as experienced and accomplished was quite intimidating.
I remember wondering what I could possibly bring to the table and whether I had enough knowledge or experience to really add value to the group. I think, deep down, I was worried that I might not have much to offer.
What I’ve come to realise through being part of The Secret Club is that we all bring our own experiences, different ways of approaching things and our own individual strengths. It has been incredibly reassuring to realise that, regardless of our roles, backgrounds or levels of experience, we are all figuring things out in our own way.
I’m particularly grateful for the way Emily has created such a wonderful space for the group to develop and grow year on year. The environment is safe, open and supportive and it has been made extremely easy for me to be honest, ask questions and step outside of my comfort zone.
We’ve been spoilt this year with having two wonderful Co-Chairs who have been incredibly positive and supportive. They have provided focus, guidance and encouragement, particularly through my 1-2-1 mentoring sessions. These sessions have given me the opportunity to pause, step back and properly reflect on myself, challenge some of the things that hold me back and focus on the areas that really matter to me.
One of the things I value most about The Secret Club is the people. I’ve had the opportunity to meet some amazing, talented and generous people who have been open enough to share their experiences (the good and the bad!)
Perhaps most importantly, being part of this group has helped me recognise that my own experiences and perspective do have value. It has given me a confidence that I didn’t necessarily have when I first joined, and has encouraged me to contribute even when I’m not sure that what I have to say is particularly significant.
I still have a few months to go before I complete my year with The Secret Club, and I know there is still so much more for me to gain, learn and grow from. But looking back at how I felt when I first applied, I’m really grateful that I pushed myself to take that step. Thank you for creating it and for continuing to nurture such a supportive and inspiring community.
